You may feel like a magnet for those cops sitting on the side of the road looking for speeders, but there are ways to prevent these tickets in the future. It starts with selecting the vehicle you choose to hit the road in. You are obviously going to be a lot more noticeable in a flashy sports car than you are in something that isn't as flashy on the outside. You can find fast vehicles that don't look like speed demons from the outside. Of course, a radar detector is also a good addition regardless of the type of vehicle you drive.

Another very simple way to avoid that radar gun is to be very alert as to how the police hide and set up traps for speeders. They don't always sit out where you can see them! They may be just on the other side of a curve or hill and they will pick up your speed before you can actually see them. They may also be sitting near highway on ramps, tucked into a line of trees, or in front of a semi truck. Most drivers speed around big trucks, but be careful because a police car could be driving just in front of that truck. Always slow down for hills and curves if you can't see what is on the other side.

Try to keep your vehicle in the right hand lane as much as you can. The police know that speeders tend to be in the left hand lane, so make you pass in the left and get back into the right hand lane as soon as possible. Don't weave through traffic if you can avoid it because you will draw unwanted attention to yourself. The patrol officers could even end up pulling you over for reckless driving as well as speeding. That could result in double the fines!

Keep an eye on your rear-view mirror, especially when it's dark, for any vehicle that may be approaching very quickly. If you're driving at 70 or 80 miles an hour on the highway and a car is creeping up on you, it's entirely possible that it's a patrol car doing a "Paced Speeding Ticket", or it's another speeder who can act as your personal "Draftie".

Other speeders on the highway offer an advantage to you. They can be your "draftie," which essentially means you let them speed first so any upcoming radar guns will grab them before they can grab you. You just have to be cautious when following another speeder because if the cop comes up from behind the scenario is reversed and you are now the "draftie" about to get caught first.

You can't predict exactly what an unmarked cruiser is going to look like, so always pay attention to cars on the side of the road. You may be able to help someone out if they are broken down or avoid an accident if someone is about to pull back onto the road. The best thing of all is noticing an unmarked cruiser trying to act like a broken down vehicle so you will speed by them.

You don't want the super high insurance rates that come with speeding tickets. Be alert and know where you are at all times. You can get where you're going with speed without bringing home the ticket.
